The Bronze Medallion preparation course builds the physical skills and endurance required for certification. Swimmers continue stroke development with 100 m swims of front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke while training toward a 400 m swim in 12 minutes. Participants practice head-up swimming, surface dives, underwater swims, retrieving a 5 lb brick, treading water for up to two minutes, and introductory towing with a manikin to prepare for basic lifesaving rescues.

The Bronze Cross preparation course further develops the physical skills and endurance required for certification. Swimmers continue stroke development with 150 m swims of front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke while training toward a 400 m swim in 11 minutes. Skills include head-up swimming, surface dives to recover a manikin, treading water while supporting a 10 lb brick, as well as sprinting and diving.

The National Lifeguard preparation course focuses on advanced endurance and rescue skills required for certification. Swimmers continue stroke development with 200 m swims of front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke while training toward a 400 m swim in 10 minutes. Additional skills include 50 m sprints, 15 m underwater swims, treading water while supporting a 20 lb brick, submerged victim recovery, and advanced towing techniques.

Swimmers continue stroke development with 50 m swims of front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke. Lifesaving Sport skills include a 25 m obstacle swim and a 15 m object carry. First aid training focuses on assessing conscious victims, contacting EMS, and treating bleeding. Fitness improves through 350 m workouts and 100 m timed swims.

Swimmers further develop their strokes over 75 m swims of each stroke. They practice Lifesaving Sport skills such as a lifesaving medley, timed object support, and rescues using a buoyant aid. First aid training includes assessing unconscious victims, treating victims in shock, and managing obstructed airways. Skill drills help build a strong lifesaving foundation.

Swimmers are challenged with 600 m workouts, 300 m timed swims, and a 25 m object carry while refining strokes over 100 m swims. First aid focuses on treating bone or joint injuries and respiratory emergencies, including asthma and allergic reactions. Lifesaving skills include defense methods, victim removals, and rolling over and supporting a face-up victim in shallow water.

This course develops swimming proficiency, lifesaving skills, and personal fitness. Participants refine their stroke technique, acquire self-rescue skills, and apply fitness principles through structured training workouts. Bronze Star provides an excellent foundation for Bronze Medallion and offers a fun introduction to lifesaving sport.

Challenges the candidate both mentally and physically. Judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness – the four components of water rescue – form the basis of Bronze Medallion training. Candidates acquire the assessment and problem-solving skills needed to make good decisions in, on, and around the water. Bronze Medallion is a prerequisite for assistant lifeguard training in Bronze Cross.

Begins the transition from lifesaving to lifeguarding and prepares candidates for responsibilities as assistant lifeguards. Candidates strengthen and expand their lifesaving skills and begin to apply the principles and techniques of active surveillance in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross emphasizes the importance of teamwork and communication in preventing and responding to aquatic emergencies. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for advanced training in the Society’s National Lifeguard and leadership certification programs.

National Lifeguard is a legal certificate for lifeguarding throughout the country and is recognized by the province of Ontario for lifeguarding public swimming pools. This certification is designed to develop the fundamental values, judgment, knowledge, skills and fitness required by lifeguards. The National Lifeguard course emphasizes the lifeguarding skills, principles and practices, and the decision-making processes that will assist the lifeguard to provide effective safety supervision in swimming pool environments.

Through classroom learning and in-water practice, the Lifesaving Society Assistant Instructor course prepares candidates to help instructors with swimming and lifesaving classes. Candidates are introduced to key principles of learning and teaching while they master basic progressions. The roles and responsibilities of instructors and their assistants are emphasized.

This new in-person recertification course focuses on the competencies learned in the instructor, coach and examiner courses and provides a refresher to those competencies. Course content will be updated every two years. This course provides the 4 points required to complete the leadership recertification for instructors, coaches, examiners and examiner mentors. This course does not automatically recertify a candidate. Following successful course completion candidates must complete the recertification process to be recertified

Intermediate First Aid includes all aspects of Basic First Aid and provides additional comprehensive first aid training. Candidates demonstrate first aid care for anaphylaxis, shock, stroke, amputations, facial injuries, burn injuries, fractures and dislocations, neck or spinal column injuries, seizures, diabetic emergencies, and environmental injury and illness. Includes CPR-C with AED certification for adult, child and infant. It is recognized by Ontario’s Workplace Safety & Insurance Board.

Prerequisites: Current Intermediate First Aid (SFA) award holders may recertify their Lifesaving Society IFA certification just once on a Lifesaving Society IFA Recertification Course not more than 3 years from the Intermediate First Aid date of issue. To renew IFA certifications subsequently, award holders must repeat the full Intermediate First Aid Course. Thereafter, individuals may renew by alternating recertification and original courses.
