How Can I Boost My Child’s Progress in the Water?

Swimming is a valuable life skill that can open up a world of enjoyment and adventure. Learning to swim not only boosts confidence but also provides children with the joy of being comfortable and safe in the water. Swimming lessons offer a perfect balance of fun and education; helping children develop coordination, strength, and a lifelong love for the water.

Parents often ask how many lessons will it take for my child to learn how to swim?  How can I accelerate my child’s progress in the water? How often per week should they attend to boost skill development? Of course every child is different and each child will learn to swim at their own pace.

However, there are several factors that can influence how quickly and confidently they develop their swimming skills:

1. Age:

Start Early for Lifelong Benefits

Swimming lessons can start as early as 2 months old. The earlier you introduce your child to water, the more comfortable they will become more quickly.

Our Parent & Tot Program is a fun way to build your child’s confidence in the water! In these classes, you’ll learn basic water safety skills and proper holding techniques. You’ll also help adjust your child to the pool in a warm environment that encourages social interaction and enjoyment.

As they grow, your child can move into the Little Waves Program (2-5 yrs) where they’ll gradually build water confidence and skills through play-based learning and get ready to move on to our Big Waves Program (6yrs and up).

2. Frequency:

The More Frequently They Swim, The Faster They Will Learn

Just like any new skill, practice makes perfect. The more often your child is in the water, the faster they’ll pick up swimming techniques. If you’re only taking your child to lessons occasionally, it might take them longer to master certain skills and get comfortable in the water. Therefore, it’s important to make swimming a continuous and consistent activity for them. The more comfortable they feel in the water, the faster they will learn to swim confidently. Make swimming a year-round activity and consider increasing your weekly lesson frequency for faster progress!

3. Consistency:

Building Momentum

A consistent commitment to swimming lessons year round will increase progress!. A regular swimming schedule throughout the year helps with familiarity with the water and creates learning momentum. Make swimming a part of your weekly routine. Since repetition and reinforcement are key to how kids learn, making a weekly trip to the pool can really help them master new skills and techniques.

If you want to boost their progress or if your child is struggling with a certain skill it might be a good idea to increase the frequency of their lessons. We have seen it time and time again that kids who swim more than once per week make faster progress. Consider adding a second lesson to your weekly swim schedule and you will definitely notice a difference in their progress!

A Lifelong Journey of Swimming

Learning to swim is more than just an essential life skill, it is a lifelong journey that promotes physical, emotional, and social development.

From building strength and endurance to improving cardiovascular health; swimming offers a wide range of benefits that extend far beyond the pool. It teaches valuable social skills, helps children work as part of a team, and offers a fun way for them to bond with others in their age group.

It’s never too early or too late to introduce your child to the water, and, as a parent, joining them in the learning process can be just as rewarding.

While there’s no one-size-fits-all answer to how often your child should take swimming lessons, understanding their unique needs and abilities is key to finding the right rhythm for their progress.

A consistent schedule and frequent practice will go a long way in helping your child feel confident and capable in the water more quickly. If you want to really boost your child’s progress try adding a second swim lesson per week to their schedule and see the difference it will make.
